This course is an introduction to watercolor with emphasis on how to approach landscapes. The class will encompass a transition from purely tonal value studies, to limited palette color temperature studies, to full palette watercolor paintings. Beginning with the value studies will develop our understanding of how to create a sense of light, space and form through shapes of light and shadow. You will understand how to utilize transparencies of ink and watercolor to achieve this.

Throughout the class we will look at the work of many painters throughout the history of painting. Looking at the works of the Masters will help you understand what watercolor is and the possibilities that the medium offers.  We will use what we gained from the Master Copies and apply it to our subject matter.  Materials list below

    Dates: Fridays 10/29 - 12/3

    6 sessions

    Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

    Materials List

If you have a collection of watercolors or a preferred palette, feel free to use those.

Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Yellow Light

Red: Crimson Lake, Cadmium Red Light

    Blue: Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue

    Plastic Palette

I highly recommend using Bamboo brushes which are typically used for sumi ink and calligraphy. These brushes allow for the broadest range of mark making and I’ve found them to be the most versatile brush possible.

Yasutomo and Winsor & Newton are fine brands but the brand matters less with these. I would recommend a range of size from #1 - #6 but having just 2 or 3 brushes one small, one medium and one large will be perfectly sufficient.

    Watercolor Paper:

Recommended Brands: Arches, Fabriano and Strathmore.

Your Watercolor Paper should be no less that 140 lb weight paper

Cold Press – This paper has a more coarse tooth and has a nice level of absorbency depending on the brand.

Hot Press – This paper is perfectly smooth and typically is a little less absorbent than Cold Press.

I recommend trying both Hot and Cold press papers to see what you prefer.

    Other Materials:

    Masking tape

    Paper towels

Masonite  or other board mount your paper on. Recommend a size of 11” x 14” or 12” x 16”

Plastic or glass jar  for water
