This class focusses on expressionism and fauvism. This artistic style will ask the artist to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects/events arouse within a person. We will be experimenting with brushwork and saturated colors while working toward a distortion and abstraction of the image. Prior painting experience, understanding the basic concepts of value, and drawing the face and/or body will be helpful for this class. Please bring a black & white photograph/print-out of yourself/someone else and preferred acrylic supplies. Acrylic kits available through NHAC if ordered by registration deadline.

Learn how to construct three-dimensional objects, problem-solve features such as doors, windows, multiple stories, and staircases, and gain confidence in your ability to invent and explore. This is NOT a technical architecture or design class and requires no expertise in math or engineering. Just bring your old delivery boxes and your ideas!  Please bring corrugated cardboard boxes and any other recycled materials you’d like to use. Other materials provided.

    3 sessions

    Time: 12:30pm -4:00pm

Materials list: Please bring the following Prismacolor pencils or their equivalents: Lemon Yellow # 915, Apple Green # 912, Olive Green # 911, True Blue # 903, Powder Blue # 1087, Imperial Violet, #1007, Violet # 932, Raspberry # 1030, Poppy Red # 922, Orange # 918, Yellowed Orange # 1002, Cream # 914, White # 938, Black # 935, Sepia # 948, and a colorless blender. Also bring a graphite pencil, HB or 2H, kneaded eraser, a white plastic eraser, Strathmore or Canson or Stonehenge Bristol vellum paper around 9x12 or 10x14, tracing paper, Xacto knife or razor blade, ruler, magnifying glass, and a pencil sharpener. If your pencils are new please sharpen them prior to class, and be sure to sharpen the end opposite the color name and number.

The list I am giving you is very basic and allows you to mix further colors. I am suggesting Prismacolor pencils, as they are easier to find that many European brands. If you have a set of artist quality pencils, such as Faber Castell Polychromos, or Derwent, these should be just fine. The point is to have artist quality with which to work. Your work can only be as good as the quality of your supplies.
