We offer classes for adults, teens and children.  Our class sessions run Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
Please check back as we update our class offerings seasonally and occasionally add additional classes!

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF CLASS REGISTRATION DEADLINES.  If you wish to register for a class after the deadline, please contact the NHAC Office (412) 364-3622 or visit the center at 3432 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. 

 

Please note: No refunds will be issued after first class/day of camp. Compensation for missed classes is not available. Refunds for classes & workshops given if cancelled one week prior.  Memberships are non-refundable.

    Ages 14 to Adult


    Artist Olga Brindar will spend the first half of the workshop demonstrating the steps involved in painting a still life in acrylic, from outline to completion. In the second half, students will have the opportunity to create their own still-life, based on Olga’s instruction and guidance, and enjoy instructor and peer feedback in a critique at the end of the workshop. Some painting and/or experience suggested, but not required! This workshop is tailored to the beginner artist!  Materials list below.

    Materials list: Stretched canvas or canvas board (18x24 or similar size) Acrylic paints in, at minimum, the following colors: titanium white, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, raw umber, burnt umber, mars black. (OPTIONAL additions: hooker’s green, raw sienna, burnt sienna, alizarine crimson, pthalo green) A selection of flat brushes, from size 5 to size 30 (roughly 5 or more) A few round brushes in various sizes Acrylic palette Jar or can for water

    Learn to create stunning fused glass pendants & earrings! Beginner & experienced glass artists can make up to 8 pieces of wearable art. Class includes tips on the use of dichroic glass, layering glass, use of frit and stringers and the difference between full fuse and tack fuse. Many colors & patterns of glass available!  All materials included.

    Ages 12 to Adult


    Shibori is the art of folding, twisting and clamping cloth before dyeing to create intricate patterns. In the advanced Shibori workshop, we will explore binding, "kumo" (spiderweb), "kanoko" (rings), "ori nui" (fold stitching), "mokume" (tree bark stitching) and "karamatsu" (Larch tree stitching). These advanced techniques will require the use of needles & thread to sew & bind the silk scarves. The sewing techniques will be practiced first before you stitch, bind, and dye two scarves.  All materials included.

    From hamsters to horses, create a colorful poster of your favorite pet to hang in your room. Students will be guided through the drawing process and then immortalize their pet in paint! Bring several photos to choose from All materials included.

    In anticipation of Spring & Easter, Pysanky are a tradition in Eastern Europe. This batik method of applying layers of beeswax and egg dye to the eggs creates intricate and beautiful designs. In this workshop you will create up to 4 eggs depending on the intricacy, and learn about the symbolism of the designs and colors. Hot wax is used in this class.  All materials included.

    Always wanted to design and create your own invention? From machines to games to musical instruments, each workshop is different!     Ages 12-Adult

    Learn basic techniques of rug hooking using both wool yarn & wool strips. You’ll design your own canvas to create either large coasters or hot pads.  The differences between primitive and fine hooking will be discussed as well as regional traditions.  A wide variety of colors available to complete this project.  (Approximate project dimensions: coasters, 4"x 4" & hot pad, 7" x 7")  All materials included.

    Create a hand built basket with strips of interwoven clay. Students have the option of uniquely finishing the top of the bowl with clay decorations, adding a handle. and selecting a glaze that will be fired on the basket. The baskets will then be ready for your decorated eggs, candy, fruit, etc.  All materials included.

All skill levels welcome, even if you have no idea of what Yupo is. Bring your imagination, your sense of play, watercolors, brushes, a Sharpie and your painting clothes. We will be pouring, dropping, stamping and stenciling watercolor on 9 x 12 sheets of Yupo plastic.  You will learn ways to control the flow of paint and even more ways to allow the paint to be joyously out of control. Yupo paper included.
