We offer classes for adults, teens and children.  Our class sessions run Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
Please check back as we update our class offerings seasonally and occasionally add additional classes!

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF CLASS REGISTRATION DEADLINES.  If you wish to register for a class after the deadline, please contact the NHAC Office (412) 364-3622 or visit the center at 3432 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. 

 

Please note: No refunds/credits will be issued after first class/day of camp. Compensation for missed classes is not available. Refunds for classes & workshops given if cancelled one week prior.  Memberships are non-refundable. 

**Payment required upon registration. Registrations not finalized within 15 minutes are automatically removed as classes have limited space.

    Ages Teen-Adult

    Work in a medium of your choice to create an image using color, shape, value and texture. A demonstration and use of problem solving will be a part of this workshop. Please bring: sketch book, pencil and eraser and other supplies you will be using for project.

    The North Hills Art Center is a Pokémon Go® gym, so come with your creativity to explore some of ways to create Pokémon® art. You will learn how to draw and render the characters and create a colored polymer clay sculpture of your favorite Pokémon®.   All materials included.

    Experienced potters may work at their own pace and are encouraged to work on the wheel or do hand building. Clay and glazes sold through the studio. **Please note: you must completed a 5 or 6 week pottery class to join this Open Studio Session as there is  NO INSTRUCTION GIVEN First floor studio.

    Ages 14-16

    Toy theater is theater performance...but little! This art form uses small, table top stages with characters made up of toys or paper. Toy theater dates back to the early 19th century--once a popular form of home family entertainment. Now, toy theater is having a major comeback among puppeteers and other types of artists. Come join in on the toy theater way of bringing your stories to life!  All  materials included.

    Ages 16-Adult     

    Using the fundamentals of how to draw and paint portraits using shapes, measurements, values, lighting and more will be the first part of day one. The remainder of time will be spent on your project. You can use any medium from pencil to paint of your choosing. Bring a snack for lunch for break. Please bring: large, clear references, sketch pad, variety of drawing pencils, white and kneaded erasers: for painting - please have knowledge for the medium you choose to work with, bring usual supplies (if using oils - please no mineral spirits).

    Ages 8-14

    If you've ever wanted to create cool lettering for greetings cards, posters, or just for fun, this workshop is for you! You'll learn the basics of creating beautiful hand lettering from pencil sketch to color finish using a variety of materials.  Please bring drawing paper, graph paper, pencils, fine and broad tip markers/Sharpies, tracing paper and ruler. Other materials will be provided. Each student will receive a handbook of resources, worksheets, and other reference material covered in class to keep.

    Make a special animal inspired clay planter for your annuals, succulents or other plants in this two session workshop. You will be using hand building techniques to create your animal planter in the first session and glaze the planter in the second session. NO CLAY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  All materials included

    Explore creative solutions for your personal expression! A variety of techniques will be taught using paint, collage, stencils, stamps and an assortment of mark making tools. Come experiment and explore without the fear of making a mistake because in your own art journal there are no mistakes. It’s a journey of self expression and fulfillment; a cool crazy ride! Please bring a hardcover book - children's book recommended. All other materials included.

    New molds!! Learn to create stunning fused glass pendants, earrings and pins. Beginner and experienced glass artists can make up to 8 pieces of wearable art. Class includes tips on the use of dichroic glass, layering glass, and using frits and stringers. You can create both full and tack fused pieces!  All materials included.

    Adult

    Using plant material, students will imprint botanical designs in clay. You can bring your own favorite leaves or use the many different plants that will be provided. Students will learn how to form the clay into a plate form using a slump mold and slab of white stoneware clay in the first class. Second class focuses on glazing. Finished pieces will be food safe. NO CLAY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  All materials included

    Create two beautifully dyed silk scarves for yourself or as a special gift. Learn how to fold, twist and tie the scarves based on the Japanese method, Shibori, to create unique colored patterns in the scarves.  All materials included.
