We offer classes for adults, teens and children.  Our class sessions run Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
Please check back as we update our class offerings seasonally and occasionally add additional classes!

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF CLASS REGISTRATION DEADLINES.  If you wish to register for a class after the deadline, please contact the NHAC Office (412) 364-3622 or visit the center at 3432 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. 

 

Please note: No refunds will be issued after first class/day of camp. Compensation for missed classes is not available. Refunds for classes & workshops given if cancelled one week prior.  Memberships are non-refundable. 

**Registrations not finalized within 24 hours are automatically removed as classes have limited space.

    Ages 12-Adult

    Fall is here and you need some new decorations! Using some hand building techniques (no experience needed), you will create clay pumpkins and gourds for your fall decor. We will have the real thing to look at for inspiration as we form our pieces. Once the pieces have been bisque fired, you will return to add the finishing touches as you apply the ceramic glazes. The pieces will be fired again and will be ready for you to pick up before Halloween! NO CLAY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  All materials included

    OPEN STUDIO POTTERY

    YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED A 5 or 6 WEEK POTTERY CLASS AT THE NHAC IN ORDER TO ATTEND OPEN STUDIO POTTERY.

    ( Ages 18 and up)

    Experienced potters may work at their own pace and are encouraged to work on the wheel or do hand building. Clay and glazes sold through the studio. **Please note: you must completed a 5 or 6 week pottery class to join this Open Studio Session as there is  NO INSTRUCTION GIVEN First floor studio.

    Thursday Mornings 9:00am - 12:00pm 

    (Please register by 3pm. No refund or credit for missed session.)

    Studio Fee: NHAC Members $10.00         Nonmembers:  $20.00

    • Limited to 6 persons plus the moderator
    • Masks will be worn at all times
    • Participants will sit every other wheel unless they are family members
    • Personal tools preferred

    This is a very simple but informative lesson on how to draw clouds. We'll cover cumulus clouds and sunsets, and why they look and work the way they do.  All materials included.

    Did you know that red, yellow, and blue are not the true pigment primaries? Or, what about this one; what does RGB stand for, and why is it important to light? This workshop gives an information-packed, interactive look into how artists use color, from the importance of complementaries, to why purple isn't a real color.

    Learn how to create a good design/pattern using basic drawing elements from start to finish. This class will help those who want to use their art for mandala, paper, pottery, quilting, zentangle© or any other project that requires an organized or free flowing design or pattern.  Please bring: drawing tablet 11 x 14 or larger, white drafting eraser, kneaded eraser, tracing paper & drawing pencils.

    Ages 11-Adult

    What's your Tiki character? Take this fun workshop to design a one-of-kind Tiki mug with your own unique character. It can be a traditional Tiki face, an animal or whatever you design. You will be carving your design on a wheel thrown stoneware cylinder and picking a colorful glaze to finish the piece. (No clay experience needed-cylinders are pre-thrown.) Mugs will be food/drink & dishwasher safe.  All materials included

    **This is a great workshop if you've always wanted to learn to carve into clay!

    Add some special handmade glass ornaments to your Christmas tree. Use them as window decorations or give them as a gift. You will create 2-3 ornaments in the workshop using a variety of glass colors, frits and stringers. All materials included.

    Ages 10-Adult

    In anticipation of Spring & Easter, Pysanky are a tradition in Eastern Europe. This batik method of applying layers of beeswax and egg dye to the eggs creates intricate and beautiful designs. In this workshop you will create up to 4 eggs depending on the intricacy, and learn about the symbolism of the designs and colors. Hot wax is used in this class.  All materials included.

    New molds!! Learn to create stunning fused glass pendants, earrings and pins. Beginner and experienced glass artists can make up to 8 pieces of wearable art. Class includes tips on the use of dichroic glass, layering glass, and using frits and stringers. You can create both full and tack fused pieces!  All materials included.

    Ages 7-12

    With the Holidays approaching, now is the time to create one of a kind handmade gifts to give to special persons in your life. You will be working with clay using the slab building technique to create a special lidded box and a decorated mug. You will come back for a second session to put the finishing touches on your pieces with a large selection of bright, colorful glazes. The pieces will be food, microwave, and dishwasher safe.  All materials included.

    Just in time for the holidays! Learn how to create beautiful hand painted wooden ornaments! Perfect to give as gifts or use on your own tree. Learn to create hand lettered designs, cozy holiday scenes, or fun animal designs or bring your own ideas! Each student will receive three 3” round pine wood ornaments with hanging ribbons.  All materials included.
