Color, Joy & Rhythm - Homage to Alma Thomas.

Registration deadline: February 15

Ages 10+

Celebrate Black History Month through color, movement, and joyful abstraction in this inspiring painting workshop honoring Alma Thomas, one of the most influential American abstract painters of the 20th century. Known for her radiant palettes and mosaic-like brushstrokes, Thomas used color as a powerful language of optimism, beauty, and hope.

Guided by Thomas’s philosophy and practice, participants will explore how color relationships, repetition, and pattern can evoke emotion and energy. After a brief visual presentation on Alma Thomas’s life, legacy, and artistic voice, students will create their own abstract paintings inspired by her iconic style—focusing on vibrancy, intuition, and personal expression rather than realism.

This workshop is welcoming to all skill levels. Whether you are new to painting or an experienced artist, you’ll leave with a finished artwork and a deeper appreciation for an artist who chose joy as a form of resistance and celebration.

All materials included.
